Baath Socialism…

John F. Devlin wrote “The Baath Party: Rise and Metamorphosis,” to talk about socialism and nationalism and how it affected the Middle Eastern countries and what was going on during that time period. Devlin started off by saying, “The Arab Socialist Baath (Arabic: Resurrection) Party began its existence as a movement for Arab nationalism, freedom from foreign rule, and the establishment of a single Arab state.” The two founders of the Baath Party were Michel ‘Aflaq, who was an Orthodox Christian and Salah al-Din Bitar, who was a Sunni Muslim. These two wanted to get rid of the political elites so they could achieve pan-Arab nationalism. They also wanted social justice for the poor and underprivileged. In the 1950s the Baath Party became official and began spreading the doctrine of unity. In 1959 the Baath Party was no more but was reconstituted in 1962-1963. In the beginning, the goal was to get rid of European influences and gain independence. Around 1959 Saddam Hussein joined as a Baathist militant. Saddam became the leader of Iraq in 1979. Hussein was not viewed as a good man at all. Devlin stated, “If Asad can rightly be assessed as the man who converted Baathism in Syria from party rule into dictatorship, Saddam Hussein can be characterized as the man who turned the Iraqi Baath system into tyranny.” Considering the USA loves to stick its nose into everyone’s problems, I’m surprised there wasn’t sooner involvement.

  • Do you think the lack of involvement sooner has to do with us trying to keep our nation afloat while being a part of the cold war, and helping out Latin America when needed?

  • What do you think would have happened, if the U.S. didn’t get involved? Now, would have things been different if the U.S. got involved sooner?

    • If the US didn’t get involved when it did 9/11 would have been the least of our worries I think. It would have been many more terrorist attacks. If the US would have gotten involved sooner MAYBE 9/11 wouldn’t have happened.
